- Hmm, I haven't mentioned Joe Lavin here before. He is one of my favorite web columnists. Here is a pullquote if you need a little convincing:
Meanwhile, as all this was going on, the Department of Justice started
leaking news that it may try to split up the Microsoft monopoly.
Essentially, we were given one new monopoly this week (AOL Time
Warner) while an older one (Microsoft) may be taken away. On the whole
"getting screwed over by massive corporations" scale, I guess the week
was pretty much a draw.

- MemePool to the rescue. How about a handy Sushi Glossary? Yes,
Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you make you stop, think
You'll think you're looking at Aquaman
I summon fish to the dish,
although I like Chalet Swiss
And I like the sushi
'cause it's never touched a frying pan
Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes
Big like LeAnn Rimes
Because I'm all about value
Bert Kaempferts's got the mad hits
You try to match wits
You try to hold me but I burst through
Gonna make a break and take a fake
I'd like a stinkin' achin' shake
I like vanilla, it's the finest of the flavors
Gotta see the show, 'cause then you'll know
The vertigo is gonna grow
'Cause it's so dangerous, you'll have to sign a waiver

- Oh man this is rude. From the Ruminations file on the TopFive.com site.
Whether on a date or at a job interview,
you can always expect the same reaction when
you utter the phrase, "frothy yellow discharge."

- Crypto is stil a big deal, David
B's lawyers are still hunting to turn over the export laws that regulate crypto. Lordy I hope they do.
We don't need this travesty against our 1st amendment rights on the book..
On the other hand note this evil lawsuit from
the MPAA
BTW, I got this nice link from Davenetics, well actually the e-mail edition is sent to me everyday. Highly recommended to extend your SlashDot fix for tech news. Here is an example of his prose:
TERRESTRIAL TAKE ---
I CALLED ROOM SERVICE THREE MONTHS AGO... ---
A private investor has plans to renovate the Mir
Space Station and turn it into a space hotel. He says
that he realized: "Mir, which was about to be thrown
away, was a huge opportunity. Yes, it's old and yes,
it has a few problems. Yet any old building has that. You don't
tear down an old building because it has a few heating and
air-conditioning problems. You renovate it.''
Dude ... it's in outer space.

Speaking of crime scenes, Who Stole Ben

- Why does research like this scare the crap outta me? Try Hormone Problems and The Bully Cycle. Boys bully because they are missing hormones, Girls bully in subtler ways!
Also,
Group Urges Violent Toy Swap is notable both for the great title and for the mention of Louisville.
Yet another great title High School Rifle Teams Draw Fire
And this one is just inexplicable Mom Charged With Getting Toddler Drunk
This is for the "I told you so" filesY2K Stop Signs Now Memento of Non-Disaster and actually so does this Moms in Pokemon brawl.

- Got this one from Dodd, on a politics list he runs. Dr. Truth, aka Patrick Moore is one of the original founders of Greanpeace. Now semi-retired and semi-hated by the greenies he walks a fine line between extremism and science. Read his Newest interview at least.

- Oh man this page from the World Wide Web Consortium on Why Cool URIs Don't Change has got to be the
best thing Tim Berners-Lee has ever written.
And I'm including the specs for HTML and HTTP in the consideration of that accolade!
Ok I'll fess up, TBL only wrote the spec for HTML2 but I linked 4.01 up there. He didn't write but it's the latest and greatest and it's his fault. =)

- I wonder if people have pushed the style over substance thing with CSS too far? There isn't a tutorial or reference page out there that tells people what they need to know about CSS. Instead there are just a scad of pages that tell you how to abuse the browser to get highlighting of links to be nonstandard. Not that I'm not guilty of the same thing *grin* but the basic trick that everyone has been complaining about (using tables to control layout) is the simplest thing I couldn't figure out ever. I was trying too hard for over a year. That kinda bugs me. People have been so bent outa shape about DOM and CSSP and CSS2 and stuff that the real point of all this got missed. Oh well.
- 10:17:45 PM by mark
*
- Meta There is a lot of tricky things to CSS and I've been playing with it a long time. One of the
things I'm learning is that Netscape and IE don't handle style that isn't in the page the same as they do style inline. That falls into the not-good category. The trick here is the style="float: left;" works as an inline tag but not in a <LINK rel=""> head loaded style sheet document.
Heck if I know why.
- 9:12:38 PM by mark
*
- Meta So I think that I have found about 90% of my bugs with CSS. The home page and this
should now look pretty good in
IE4, IE5,
NS4,
Mozilla and even
Opera. The idea is that any Fairly good CSS compatible browser should look good.
