Quick Comic Notes

Yeah, I am still planning to get some stuff done on the site this weekend and into next week. Of course there are a million things in my hair at the same time but I love da comics too much to leave em hanging for long.

  • Ignorance Is Bliss may wind up being a better review than a title but the authors have occasionally made me laugh with Look What I Brought Home so I'll keep an eye on them. I'm not much on one gimmick comics unless they transcend that and find a real groove.
  • Ink was found by InkTank which I suppose makes sense. This may be one to give a good looking at to as well.
  • Devoted Bee is more of an art link than a comic link but the comics rock. Also, reload the page a few times an notice how many friggin sub-images make up the main page... Here is a quote I like: "I just finished writing my autobiography. Granted, a lot of it's about television shows and the last hundred pages are hollowed out to store candy in, but the rest is pure Reggie." Oh yeah, and eggpants is cool too.

Oooh, Looks like big meany BellSouth may find a way to not do what people want and still make them happy. I'm glad that IgLou whupped up on em a little. I'd much rather give my DSL business to them than BS, even if it is the same system. IgLou, at least, is Linux-friendly and won't give me shit about having a router where they think my Win95 box should be. =)

Bleagh. The problem with being ill is that it drags down all your other plans with it. At least, with a little help from the internet I can get caught up on all the reading or news that I missed. Very cool meta linkage there...

In the event people haven't been checking the Space Weather every day like good little boys and girls, I thought I would go ahead and tell y'all. LOOK UP TONIGHT. There was a large (X2.3 class) solar explosion a few days back, and gobs of stuff are heading our way. There is a chance (1 in 4 or so) people above ~45 degrees geomagnetic lattitude will see the aurora TONIGHT. Louisville is about 48 degrees geomagnetic lattitude. Thought you might like to know.

Links for Fun There were a lot more of these but all three of the major browsers each choose today to crash on me. =)

Quick Links
  • CBS sues FOX over BootCamp "You stole the idea we nicked from MTV!" says CBS.
  • Microsoft votes USB 2.0 off the island. Looks like FireWire survives to the next round, where usage doubles from almost nothing to twice nothing!
  • Solar-Sail Spacecraft Spelling Bee time! In this sentence -- 'The sail will be divided into eight "blades" or "pedals" roughly triangular in shape.' -- how would you have spelled "pedals"? Maybe "petals" since it looks like a giant flower? Or "pedals" since it looks nothing whatsoever like a foot lever?
  • Jurors misstate payment in MP3.com suit and provide final straw that breaks U.S. legal system. Once something like this happens and you can actually do maths correctly, do you still have to call them a "jury of your peers"?
  • TrueNuff is a good comic. Today it got the 'blog a nice comment since someone surfing for that comic found the site. Every who posts here should feel complimented, since ThreeBoy's site design kicks my blog's ass. =)

I wound up feeling really ill last night. =( So I stayed home and worked from here today. Oddly, I finally got something done that I've been working on for weeks between other jobs. So now I have this wobbly ill+triumph feeling. That just isn't fair...

Gah, OK, the Actual Comic Update may not happen tonite. I did whack out the first page in the Perl section here on hostile and I will do my best to get SOMETHING more than a place holder up in the Comics section before I go beddy-bye. Do you have any Idea how many comics I read regularly? Without counting them down the left side real quick?

Well, there are 60+ that hit at least once a week. Another 60 or so will be on the occasional or check em every-so-often lists. That officially makes me an addict. Oh yeah, why am I behind on the update today? I read the entire archive for Acid Reflux. This comic rocks and has an amazingly original fantasy premise. Too cool, highly recommended now.

More on the big comic update:

I'm really going to tinker with the comic list tonite. I may freak out and make a sub page for all the comics since they are now officially Out Of Hand. Also, some more stuff to add the the list:

  • Catchy Title aka Insert Catchy Title Here is an amusing vertical strip I will need to take the time to check out better. Maybe you should too?
  • Acid Reflux should probably be given a second chance. I remember looking at it before but I think it dropped off the mental radar.
  • Cartoon Community isn't a strip, it's a site. Sorta Cartoon Weblog and shout-about place.
  • Eternal Caffeine Junkie is notable because they spelled "caffeine" correctly but got "eternal" wrong in their URL. Click or mouseover and see. =) Maybe there is some sorta limit? They should have used "ecj.keenspace.com" then. Amusing strip, I'll have to peek at it laters...

I'm thinking of changing the site slogan to "Earth First! Make Mars Our Bitch!" What do you think?

Well, obviously, if you are hip enough you think I've been watching too many animated television programs. You didn't think the online comic obsession just sprung for nowhere, did you? Nope, I luv me some cartoons and I luv me some comics. Its all one big spicy meatburger of happiness. Draw it and I will watch. Sculpt if from clay and make it do silly things and I will watch. Meticulously shove little bits of plastic around in front of a camera and I will gape in amazement at what a psycho you are unless you make sure the camera is pointed at the stuff you are pushing around. Then I will watch. That people make these things happen with their hands and it comes to life warps my fragile mind.

Still, it is a witty slogan...

I hate linking to Adobe's PDFs but sometimes you just have to deal with them. The FCC uses them to annoy their web developers, I think. Nevertheless, you should suffer through and read this Policy Statement on Indecency Statue publication for all the good bits they wrote down. Amusing that what we can't say on the radio they can post on the web, eh?

Curl up in a ball Well, if you are a computer language wonk you may be interested in the new Curl language spec. Personally, to me, it looks like a huge step backward. I'd rather use The Template Toolkit to mix code and text. Curl has some nice stuff and a buncha evil like any new language. What I don't see is the compelling reason to change.

It seems like a language designed by a large group of people going, "Oh Ooh! You know what ELSE would be cool?". It is mega-kitchen-soup and syntacticly bland and clumsy. Not a pretty thing.

Cute name tho. And it allows anonymous fuctions so you can do lambda style coding as well as raw procedural stuff and OOP-style coding. Every thing you'd want in a modern language if you didn't care about syntax or ease of use. More later as I digest the spec...

One choice quote about its specialized datatypes to hurt your brain: "Because quantities are primitive data types, the use of quantities is efficient."Oh yeah, that is clear. =P
